You’re never too old to play in the sandbox:
The physics of soft materials

*Is toothpaste a liquid or a solid?
*Why is it so difficult to run on sand?
*What makes squishy stuff, well, squishy?
*And what is any of this good for?

Kerstin Nordstrom is a Clare Boothe Luce assistant professor of physics at Mount Holyoke College where she researches complex fluid flows. Such fluids are commonplace in both nature and industry, yet are still poorly understood, sometimes exhibiting bizarre behavior. Her lab studies a variety of such systems, including avalanching sand, flowing colloids in microfluidic devices, and suspensions of algae.
