A statistical physicist walks into a bar… and then another bar, and then another bar, and then another bar. They were all pretty average.

Teaching Quantum Physics to Computers: The Infinite Improbability Drive, Statistical Physics, and Harnessing the Questionable Intelligence of Machines

  • What’s so special about quantum materials?
  • Are there questions that can’t be answered?
  • How can supercomputers help us solve problems that we can’t do by ourselves?
  • Are machines really as intelligent as they seem?

Professor Casey Berger is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics at Smith College. Casey’s research is in applying high performance computing to many-body quantum systems. She’s currently investigating the effectiveness of the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem in quantum materials. Previously, she was a postdoctoral research associate at Boston University in the physics department and the Hariri Institute for Computing. She earned her PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellow and a William Neal Reynolds fellow in the Royster Society of Fellows. She also works on issues of diversity and equity in STEM, with an emphasis on improving representation and support of women, LGBTQ folks, BIPOC, and other underrepresented groups in STEM. When Casey’s not doing science, you can find her working on her novels or outside running, hiking, or kayaking.

Bring a friend and join us as we enjoy lively conversations, prizes, and brilliant minds. Light refreshments will be available outside the presentation room, first come, first served. This is an inclusive, family-friendly event for people from all walks of life (ALL are very much welcome: kids, college students, your parents!). We promise, you’ll learn something if you come. And hey, you might even win a prize! Remember… Admission is FREE!

ABB allows guests to bring outside food! Please feel free to brings your own snacks with you, too.

SciTech Cafe events are open to any one with a curious mind regardless of age and background.  Our events, prizes, and snacks are free, but donations are appreciated.

This event is hosted at Abandoned Building Brewery in Easthampton, MA.
