Baby’s First Microbiome: How Breast Milk Nourishes Beneficial Microbes in their Gut

  • What benefit do commensal bacteria in the gut provide the infant early in development?
  • What is in breast milk that promotes beneficial microbes and restricts harmful pathogens?
  • What nutritional or medical applications have been innovated from understanding how breast milk nourishes the infant microbiome?

Professor David Sela is Assistant Professor, Dept. of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The objective of his research is to contribute new scientific knowledge through mentorship of researchers broadly interested in food’s role in health and wellness. His research activities often rely on sequence-based approaches employed to investigate the genomics and ecology of commensal microorganisms. Moreover, his lab is determined to characterize mechanistic linkages with health emanating from host-microbial interactions.
