Active Matter, Mixing, and Salt-Water Taffy

  • What is active matter and why are physicists interested in it?
  • What is braid theory and how can it be used to describe fluid motion?
  • How can we quantify mixing and are there systems that mix as efficiently as possible?
  • What is the secret to making good taffy?

Spencer Smith is an Associate Professor of physics at Mount Holyoke College. His research lies at the intersection of fluid dynamics, chaos theory, and topology. He also has a long standing interest in art and teaches a class on the intersection of physics and art. Outside of MHC Spencer loves hiking and exploring the valley with his kids.
